After fettling this up a few months ago. And just to show that I'm not really that scared of the 'Devil's Spirit', I thought it was about time I lit it up. Cracking little blue flame So I put the pot on for a nice cup of coffee. Amazing how a simple blue flame can bring a smile to your face.
Have you got the wrench (spanner) shaped brand on your thumb and forefinger yet? Leaving the key on a running petrol burner is a sure way of getting it. I got mine more than thirty years ago. Gerry
Gerry Funny you should say that I did notice that it got a bit warm. Mind you, after 40 years of working with my hands, even though I have the touch of a midwife , my finger skin is a bit like elephant hide. I'm not sure if it's better to keep the key on, we are talking 'The Devil's Spirit' here, so that it can be turned off in a hurry or taking it off and dieing in a ball of flame.
Happy Sunday, Henry, Great photos of your little 71!!! As always, your fettling work is first cabin, and it's a pleasure to see your handiwork!!! The 71 is one of my most favorite stoves, and as I've said before, I have one specific one that will eat any other small stove, of it's tribe, for breakfast!! The thing should be registered with the Atomic Energy Commission!! Way to go, Henry, and thanks for sharing your success with us!! Take care, and God Bless! Every Good Wish, Doc Mark
Nice fettle H, what paint did you use? Don't worry about removing the key, if its going to blow, the pin or valve will pop saving you the trouble of turning off the stove I love my 71's and 123's great little stoves
Can't remember, but I think it may have been a Plastikote silver and a coat of lacquer. I have the can at work, I'll have a look and get back to you on that one.
Happy Sunday It's big roast dinner and calvados day I must say I'm very impressed with it. It lit so easily, as did the newly fettled 8R the other day I'm thinking of making up a 'traveling kit' for the back of the Land Rover. A small padded box (padded cell more like) with the 71, my small coffee pot, couple of espresso cups. I could always go out into the car park of a lunch time and have a brew up Don't get any funny ideas KERO RULES OK 8)
I have a 71L enroute in not nearly as good condition, the bar has been raised and then some. Polished brass must be just about nicest of all polished metals, way nicer than chrome and not as garish as actual gold. Sexy stove!
It was given to me by a friend, it comes from Germany. Every time he travels over he gets 1/2 doz litre bottles. It says on the bottle blah blah grrr Naptha blah bla grrr Works OK, even in my Zippo lighter
Gidday Henry, What sort of Land Rover is it destined for? I'm still trying for an Optimus 22 for under the drivers seat of my Defender 130. Very nice work on the 71, does your Landy look as good? Cheers, Tom
Nice work Henry . . . . must dig mine out and get it similarly sorted. They are nice stoves, no two ways about it. Keith
Tom I've got a 200 Tdi Discovery and no it doesn't. Covered in mud and crap on the outside as for inside, I think my shed is tidier
Sounds like mine. My weekday car is a 3 door 200 Tdi Disco, and I can't remember the last time it was washed (or tidied). The precious 130 is another story.....apart from the back, which is where the dog lives. Still, gotta love 'em. Especially with the price of petrol
